CEO VOICE
Dear SAWEA Members,

2024 has started with multiple developments in the sector that require our urgent attention and swift action in positioning wind technology at the forefront of South Africa’s energy mix. This provides an opportunity to further strengthen our relationships with the Government and continue our advocacy efforts to support the rapid rollout of wind energy.

While our main focus remains on the critical issue of national grid capacity, we have our eye on the IRP 2023, REIPPPP BW7, and multiple private wind projects reaching fruition. The SAWEA team has hit the ground running in implementing our two main strategic priorities: to strategically engage members on industry-related matters, as well as the strategic stakeholder selection for focused engagement to facilitate increased integration of wind energy onto the grid...

SAWEA CAA Exemption Outcome Letter
As you may have been aware, in November 2023 SAWEA submitted a blanket application to the South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) - (Application for Recognition of Alternative Means of Compliance or AMoC) to approve patterning of wind turbine blades at wind farms for the purposes of avifaunal collision mitigation. The AMoC application was submitted in terms of Civil Aviation Regulation (CAR) 11.04.6, read with CAR 11.04.2 and 11.04.3, for turbine blades at wind farms not conforming strictly with CATS 139.01.30 (3) (b in terms of which, SAWEA sought approval.

SAWEA’s AMoC application has since been approved by the CAA on 18 January 2024 as per the attached letter. Please note that all other applicable provisions of CARS and SA-CATS must still be complied with though feel free to utilize the attached letter in your application letters to CAA. Most notably, please also refer to condition 5 and relevant sub-points for additional requirements for any particular wind farm patterning blades for further approval by SA CAA subsequent to implementation.
SAWEA would like to thank the task team emanating out of the Wind Energy and Birds Subcommittee, specifically the lead of the subcommittee, Shaun Taylor for assisting in driving the application process as well as our members and partners for their studious work to ensure the success of this application.
