As we settle in the year, on course to advocate the benefits of increased and accelerated wind energy deployment, to contribute towards the country's energy security, we are administratively preparing the Association in good governance to represent the industry for the best results.

On the 20th of February, we convened our Annual General Meeting (AGM) with great success, during which we unveiled our inaugural annual report. This document serves as a comprehensive overview of our sector's significant contributions to the nation’s energy landscape throughout 2023. |

Our 2024 Standing Committee meetings for Market Development, Project Development, Project Implementation, Asset Management and Social Impact have commenced. A big thank you to all committee members who attended meetings for Q1. Meeting schedules have been shared with registered participants, and meeting open to the full membership will be communicated. To register for any of the standing committees, please click here. The first standing committees’ meetings are being used to set up structures, identify critical topics for discussion and agree on key deliverables. It is through the standing committees that we can articulate industry problem statements and collectively develop solutions that will move the industry forward. It is these positions that are used to motivate the advancement of the wind industry. |

Enel Green Power signs large-scale South Africa commercial renewable energy deal
Enel Green Power South Africa has signed three long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with industrial gases company Air Liquide South Africa and energy and chemicals company Sasol to supply 330 MW of renewable energy to Sasol’s Secunda site, where Air Liquide operates its large-scale oxygen production facility. |

SAWEA Development Programmes - Wind Industry Internship Programme (WIIP) 2024
The response to this year's cohort has been positive from both Host Companies and Graduates, with a total of thirty (30) learners successfully placed for the 2024 cycle, which will commence on 4 March 2024. We are very excited about the consistent growth witnessed with WIIP and eagerly anticipate further expansion next year. SAWEA continues to make strides in fulfilling its mandate to enhance the Renewable Energy (RE) workforce. |

SAWEA Development Programmes - Work Readiness Programme (WRP) 2024
Building on the success of the inaugural WRP in 2023, we have successfully implemented the 2024 iteration of this programme, with an impressive participation of 30 graduates. The WRP remains dedicated to improving the effectiveness of interns in their respective work environments through the WIIP programme. |

Nersa formally publishes licences for new grid company
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has officially published the three licences required for the operationalisation of the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA), having approved their transfer from Eskom to the NTCSA last year. |

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has extended the deadline for comments on the draft Integrated Resource Plan (IRP 2023) to 23 March 2024. |

Zimbabwe to build 200MW wind farm
Zimbabwean company, Optate Africa, plans to build a 200MW wind power plant near the town of Plumtree in the south-west of the nation. It has sought a 25-year lease from Mangwe Rural District Council for 100 hectares of land to set up the plant. |

GREENCAPE ENERGY EVENT
Our CEO, Niveshen Govender, was one of the speakers on the 6th of February at a networking event organised by GreenCape. The purpose of the event was to unpack the REIPPP Bid Window 7 and to get insights from different industry leaders, including the wind industry. The event was attended by developers, financiers and government officials. |
